The Wedding Dress Codes: A Millennial Guide

I know it’s hard to believe but we are at that age where people decide to start their own families. Scary, right? It’s very refreshing to see my peers commit to one another in the official way. It reminds me that when you find your person; anything is possible.

Weddings are so exciting to attend because for millennial’s, they are rare. Currently our generation faces the misfortunes of: college debt, underpaid salaries, unemployment, troubles with moving out of our parent’s home (because of debt and lack of job opportunities) and so much more. So once you are able to find your special person it’s time to celebrate!!!

In order to assure you look as good as you feel for the upcoming nuptials, I have put together a guide of suggestions of what to wear.

  • Formal Event

Women: Floor length dress, preferably a gown.

Men: A tuxedo. A cummerbund is optional or you can skip it for suspenders.

  • Semi-Formal

Women: Tea-length (midi) or knee length dress.

Men: Suit and tie with pocket square.

  • Cocktail

Women: Dress should fall at the knee or right above. Jumpsuits can work or a formal top with pants.

Men: Suit with no tie, pocket square preferred.

Things to avoid

  • Wearing white: Traditionally, the bride’s gown is usually that color. Let’s save that only for her.

  • Dressing in club attire: Weddings are parties but they should be considered classy ones. Deep V-neck dresses, extremely short and tight dresses, and anything see-through is inappropriate. Remember that you’ll be surrounded by someone else’s family.

  • Flashy fabrics: Sparkles, metallic’s, anything extremely shiny is a no. Go for something less obvious, but still eye-catching like ruffles.
