Are You Emotionally Intelligent?
“The capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions. To handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.” That is the definition Google gave me when I searched for emotional intelligence. My definition of it is just being aware of not only your own emotions but of others. This is a strong “people skill” that is great to have.
There are 3 important elements of emotional intelligence which are: self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy.
Self-awareness is understanding your emotions and not letting your feelings rule you.
Self-regulation is the ability to control your emotions and impulses. Making sure to think before you act and not make a careless decision. (Something I am very good at *pats myself on the back*)
Empathy is being able to identify or understand the wants/needs and viewpoints of others. People with empathy are usually great listeners and are good at recognizing how others feel.
Now that you fully understand what emotional intelligence is, here is how you can apply it to your daily lifestyle!
-Think about what you say to others.
Always try to put yourself in their place and be more open to their needs.
It’s not always what you say but HOW you say it. Delivery and tone matter as well!
-Be happy for other people.
You must be able to acknowledge your own accomplishments separately from someone else's.
Be available to give others a chance to shine.
-Take responsibility for your actions.
If you hurt someone’s feelings don’t be afraid to ask them where you went wrong for clarity.
Don’t ignore anything you may have done wrong. Make sure you apologize directly.
“I’m sorry if I”, “I’m sorry if you feel as though”, are not apologies! Just stop.
-Your actions will affect others.
This is something you always have to take into consideration.
It can be something as simple as not showing up when you promised you would help out with something.
You must think about how you would feel if this was done to you.
If you wouldn’t like it, then some changes need to be made.
Did this help you improve your emotional intelligence?
